Book Description
The standard comprehensive sourcebook on ball and roller bearings
– now fully revised and updated
The Fourth Edition of Rolling Bearing Analysis reflects the
latest developments in this crucial sphere of mechanical and
tribological engineering. As central operating components in
industrial, automotive, and aerospace mechanisms, ball and roller
bearings are subjects of continual research and development. Yet,
few of today’s engineers understand the inner workings – in
terms of lubrication, friction, wear, and functional, wear, and
functional endurance – of those common, but crucial, elements in
mechanical power transmissions.
Rolling Bearing Analysis, Fourth Edition explores in detail the
basic principles of bearing functional and endurance performance.
Readers will find a complete range of information on roller
bearings designed for applications involving heavy loads, high
speeds, and temperature extremes. Throughout, close consideration
is paid to the advanced technological methods currently available
for predicting bearing operating parameters and life expectancy in
such applications. This Fourth Edition:
* Covers new techniques developed by the author for determining
the effect of lubrication in rolling element-raceway contacts on
bearing friction and endurance.
* Includes a new, comprehensive, and more accurate method for
assessing fatigue endurance – a basic form of this method being
endorsed by ASME International
* Contains in the new life prediction method means to properly
include the effects of bearing ring stresses, localized material
stresses, and hard particle contaminants
* Discusses the concepts of Condition-Based Maintenance in
determining when bearing replacement is necessary
* Contains an appendix providing conversion constants between
Standard International and English system units
Rolling Bearing Analysis, Fourth Edition is the essential,
state-of-the-art reference for both practicing engineers and
graduate students in tribology.
Synopsis
One of the most common methods of decreasing the wear on moving
and rotating elements is through the use of ball or roller
bearings. This text offers coverage of all aspects necessary to
understand these commonly used machine elements.
From the Back Cover
One of the most well-known experts in the field brings
cutting-edge research to practitioners in the new edition of this
important reference.
* Covers the improved mathematical calculations for rolling
bearing endurance developed by the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers and the Society of Lubrication and Tribology Engineers.
* Updated with new material on Condition-Based Maintenance, new
testing methods, and new bearing materials.
About the Author
TEDRIC A. HARRIS Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The
Pennsylvania State University, is an internationally recognized
authority on ball and roller bearing engineering. Prior to his
academic career, he accumulated more than 30 years’ experience
in bearing industry, many of these in engineering management and
executive positions, in the United States and Europe, with SKF,
the world’s largest manufacturer of roller bearings. He is a
Life Fellow of ASME International and a former chairman of the
society’s Tribology Division.
